Community engagement

I am the chairperson and co-founder of Afrofinns ry.

I have dedicated my time and passion to understanding the complexities of the Afro-Finnish community, identifying its needs, understanding its collective identity, and bridging the gaps that exist.

My role within Afrofinns has been to provide leadership, guidance, and strategic direction to the association.

Working with colleagues, especially volunteers, is challenging. Achieving our goals demands an almost corporate approach, and balancing volunteer work with these demands is often difficult. About 80% of the time, working with people is tough, but the results we achieve for our community make it all worthwhile.

Together, we have organized events, initiated programs, and collaborated with many others to promote the mission and values of Afrofinns. Some of my key achievements include:

Establishing the first platform recognizing the achievements of Afro-Finns.

Introducing Afro-Finnish fashion to the Helsinki City Museum, which is the most visited museum in Finland.

Organizing the first delegation visit of Afro-Finns to the Finnish Parliament.

Creating a business platform specifically for Afro-Finnish entrepreneurs.

Successfully launching cultural festivals that celebrate Afro-Finnish heritage.

Spearheading educational programs and workshops aimed at empowering the Afro-Finnish youth.

I have a profound connection with children and youth, which is evident in my work and commitment. I am always keen to involve the younger generation in the creation process of our community, and the kids reciprocate this love.

In essence, community engagement aims for active participation, inclusivity, and positive outcomes for both parties involved. Let’s continue building stronger communities together!
